Beth and Rip's Relationship Milestones on Yellowstone
Relive the highs and lows of Beth and Rip's unforgettable love story on Yellowstone.
Beth Dutton is the prickliest character on Yellowstone. She’s calculating, cruel, and frequently violent, but that’s what makes her decades-long romance with ranch hand Rip Wheeler so thrilling to watch. Their love is one of the few constants in a world where kidnappings, bombings, and serial killings seem to be the norm. Here’s a timeline of Beth and Rip’s relationship, starting with the very first episode of the series.
A Collision of Damaged Souls — "Daybreak" (S1E1)
The first time viewers see Beth and Rip together is certainly not the beginning of their story, which is unpacked slowly over the course of five seasons. The pair reunites in the Dutton home following a seemingly long separation with, well, a bang, so to speak. After catching up, Rip invites Beth to a music festival, to which she laments, “You ruin it every time,” and insults certain aspects of his anatomy.

Their (Official) First Date — "Kill the Messenger" (S1E2)
The next time Beth sees Rip, she tells him to pick a date more suited to her personality, so naturally they get drunk and watch wolves kill an elk. Bottle of whiskey in hand, Beth gets out of her Mercedes howling and charging the massive beasts. This understandably freaks Rip out, but she tells him, “It’s only the things I love that die, never me. Come to think of it, I’m surprised you’re still standing.”

Love, Loss, and New Beginnings — "Resurrection Day" (S2E7)
Rip climbs on the roof of the Dutton house to join Beth and her omnipresent bottle of whiskey under the stars. She asks what he spends his money on, and he reveals that he’s spent tens of thousands of dollars on elaborate headstones for his mom and brother, who were murdered by his abusive father. In this moment, Beth can tell Rip wants to say he loves her, but she asks him to wait and “tell me when it saves me.”

A Glimpse of Vulnerability — "Sins of the Father" (S2 E10)
Beth visits Rip while he’s feeding the horses and reads him a letter her dad wrote. In it, he acknowledges Rip as his adopted son and gives him a cabin on the ranch. This is a huge milestone for Rip, who has no family of his own and has spent most of his life living with the other cowboys in the bunkhouse. He gets emotional and asks Beth to reread the letter as they sit together on the front porch for the very first time.

Grieving Together — "Cowboys and Dreamers" (S3E5)
This episode begins with a flashback in which a teenage Beth learns she is pregnant with Rip’s baby. She asks Jamie for help, and he takes her to an abortion clinic but doesn’t tell her they’d need to sterilize her until it’s too late. The fallout from this results in a young Beth pushing Rip away without telling him what happened. In the present day, Beth grieves the children she and Rip will never have.

A Bold Proposal and a Testament to Modern Love — "The Beating" (S3E7)
With a glass of whiskey in hand, Beth proposes to Rip on the front porch of their cabin. “The only thing I ask is that you outlive me,” she says, “so I never have to live another day without you.” Rip points out that he can’t go to the courthouse since there is no record of his existence, so they decide to get married at Yellowstone.

A Shared Dream of Family — "Phantom Pain" (S4E2)
Without consulting Rip, Beth takes in an orphan named Carter. Beth sees a lot of her husband in Carter — a young kid alone in the world with the odds stacked against him — but Rip isn’t so keen on the idea. He kicks the kid out in the night, completely disinterested in the idea of adopting a son, but reluctantly decides to give him a job on the ranch.

A Shotgun Wedding Unlike Any Other — "Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops" (S4E10)
After kidnapping a Catholic priest at gunpoint, Beth throws together an impromptu wedding outside the Dutton house while wearing a white leopard print coat and a slinky gold dress. Despite her instance on having a real officiant for the ceremony, she can’t even get through the vows without belting, “F*** yes, I do!”

Haunted by the Past, Beth Confesses and Rip Offers Forgiveness — “One Hundred Years Is Nothing” (S5E1)
In a flashback, a teenage Beth canoodles with another guy right in front of Rip. In the present day, she wakes up in their cabin and apologizes for tormenting him in their younger years. Rip says, “You need to find someone new to fight, or you’re just gonna sit around this house and beat the shit out of yourself.” It’s a bit foreboding; despite their marital bliss, Beth still has a lot of unresolved anger and pain.

The Arrest — “Tall Drink of Water” (S5E3)
During a night out in Bozeman, a woman at the bar flirts with Rip right in front of Beth. Given her penchant for violence, it’s no surprise when Beth breaks a beer bottle over the girl’s head and even sneaks in another punch as she’s carted away by the police. Though she’s settled and focused on things like learning to cook for her husband and pseudo-son, part of Beth will always be wild and untamed.

Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow, and Rip — “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow, and You” (S5E6)
While they’re on a trip with the rest of the Yellowstone crew, Rip and Beth break away and ride their horses to a meadow to watch the sunset. It’s here that Beth realizes she has everything she’ll ever need: smokes, liquor, and Rip.
