John Mulaney & Chappell Roan SNL Recap
John Mulaney hosted SNL for the sixth time with musical guest, Chappell Roan.
Some might say the SNL five-timers club is one of the most exclusive, but what about six? John Mulaney joined the even more exclusive group with his most recent hosting gig, featuring SNL first-timer, and long-time resident of the Pink Pony Club, Chappell Roan.
Studio 8H also played host to a political guest who may or may not have just fallen out of a coconut tree.
Cold Open
Cut the dramala. What’s going onala? Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance during the episode’s cold open alongside her TV self, portrayed by Maya Rudolph. The two spoke to each other on either side of a mirror, sharing some last-minute words ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election.
Monologue
If there’s one thing Mulaney knows how to do, it’s delivering an opening monologue. The former SNL writer performed a quintessential stand-up set announcing the birth of his daughter and detailing the ups and downs (literally) of being a new father of two.
What’s That Name: Election Edition
It’s always important ahead of an election to make sure you get your facts straight. Mulaney tested his political knowledge in an election edition of “What’s That Name,” which included a guest appearance by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate, whose name... we just can’t recall.
Beppo
He’s America’s sweetheart, a national hero, and the best damn astronaut NASA has ever seen. Beppo, the space chimp, saves the day in another Dan Bulla digital short.
Port Authority Duane Reade
It wouldn’t be a John Mulaney episode without a musical sketch. Carrying on the legacy that started with the infamous Diner Lobster, this time around, Mulaney found himself as a Duane Reade cashier in a Port Authority bus terminal. Pete Davidson returned to SNL to play the unsuspecting customer who innocently orders a gallon of milk, sparking a musical mashup, from Lion King opossums to dancing Timothée Chalamet lookalikes.
Chappell Roan
The “Midwest Princess” herself performed a Halloween rendition of her hit song “Pink Pony Club” while dressed as a glam bride of Frankenstein. In her second performance, fans were surprised with a brand-new song, “The Giver,” set to the theme of a Country Bear Jamboree.
Weekend Update
It was the weekend before the election and the headlines were hot, from Trump’s garbage truck to Biden’s baby-biting. Visiting the Weekend Update desk was Reba McEntire (Heidi Gardner) detailing her election decision.
