Michael Keaton SNL Recap
Beetlejuice, beetlejuice...you know the rest.
Day-o, day-o, live from New York, it's Saturday niiight! Michael Keaton returned to SNL for the fourth time to promote his new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He was joined by musical guest Billie Eilish, who has also appeared on the show four times as a musical guest (and once as a host as well).
The episode was filled with political impressions and returning cast members, as well as a few firsts, including this season’s first digital short by Please Don’t Destroy.
Cold Open
Alec Baldwin made his return to Studio 8H, but not to reprise his role as Donald Trump. Baldwin portrayed Fox News anchor Bret Baier alongside Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris, who made sure to grab as many TikTokable moments from the interview as she could.
Monologue
In his opening monologue, Keaton managed to summon two more Beetlejuices to the stage. Mikey Day and Andy Samberg joined the actor for a total of three Beetlejuices (careful), with Samberg joking they couldn’t find a way to squeeze in his impression of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff anywhere in the cold open this week.
Skydiving
The boys are back in town! The comedic trio, Please Don’t Destroy, graced our screens with the first sketch of the season. Martin Herlihy and John Higgins played two nervous skydivers reassured by an experienced one (Ben Marshall) that everything will be alright. They were also joined by another expert skydiver (Keaton), whose custody battle over his kids would in no way impair his flying abilities or zest for life!
Forbidden Romance
As America remains divided, there’s nothing like a ukulele solo to “resolve" racial tensions. Andrew Dismukes' rendition of Train’s “Soul Sister” is exactly the uniting force we need these days.
TikTok
SNL brought audiences into a TikTok For You page this week, with familiar videos for anyone who found themselves frying their dopamine receptors with late-night doom scrolls. Harry Daniels (Bowen Yang) caught celebrities off-guard with his surprise karaoke sessions, including Eilish. Heidi Gardner also appeared as a classic TikTok trad-wife, bringing everyone at home laughs — from scratch.
Billie Eilish
SNL fans might remember Eilish’s knack for transforming the 8H stage during her first appearance in 2019, where she walked on walls while performing “Bad Guy.” This time, the stage transformed into a cloudy sky while Eilish appeared to be floating in the air. She performed “Birds of a Feather” and “Wildflower” from her newest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, and was joined on stage by her brother and album producer, Finneas.
Weekend Update
We got two SNL cast member appearances on “Weekend Update”: Sarah Sherman, who shared her thoughts on the return of the Victoria Secret Fashion Show, and Emil Wakim, who made his debut on “Update.”
Horror Choreographer
In the words of RuPaul, “Sashay away,” even if you’re notorious Halloween slasher Michael Myers. Keaton played Hollywood’s newest choreographer for the stars, and the masked killer might just be his new protégé. You can catch more Michael Myers (although probably with less dancing) in these classic movies streaming on Peacock.
Watch Saturday Night Live on Peacock and NBC, live coast-to-coast, Saturdays at 11:30p ET. Stream every episode on Peacock.
