Ancient Rome's Circus Maximus has popped up at one of Comic-Con's busiest intersections, giving fans a chance to race for glory (and a commemorative pin).

San Diego Comic-Con 2024 is off to the races, and so is Peacock. As attendees flock towards the San Diego Convention Center, it’s impossible to miss the replica of ancient Rome’s Circus Maximus constructed in honor of the new Original series Those About to Die.

Participants in the experience are to take the reins of a team of horses (the miniature mechanical kind) in a simulation of the chariot racing depicted in the show — with significantly less risk to life and limb. We don’t have the insurance for that.

Read on for a play-by-play.

The entrance to the Circus Maximus features the sweet musical stylings of a guy absolutely going at it on the timpani.

Attendees are ushered under the archway and into the betting tavern (owned by the cunning Tenax (Iwan Rheon) in the series), where a charismatic master of ceremonies gives everyone the scoop on the Circus Maximus and its massive sports betting industry.

Next, participants are divided into factions by toga-clad patricians and led into the arena.

Stepping up to the chariot, each person gets a chance to take the reins for a round of the race.

Victory requires some rein technique, but this author is proud to have secured a round for the white faction (the thrill of this can’t be overstated).

The experience concludes with a commemorative pin and a photo op, but the real prize is, of course, the friends, Romans, and countrymen we made along the way.
