Why is the U.S. Open so special?

In addition to being the third major of the year, and the hardest to win, it is a true open. Anyone can qualify, theoretically at least, be they professional, amateur, or even someone who’s never picked up a club before but is somehow secretly a golf prodigy. That’s why the Monday of the week before the tournament is known as Golf’s Longest Day, when golfers at qualifying courses across the country compete for one of the remaining spots at the U.S. Open. This year, there are 16 amateur players competing.

Who Is Playing at the Golf U.S. Open?

The majors attract the best golfers in the world, and the U.S. Open is no exception. Though Jon Rahm withdrew due to injury, the field includes the top stars of the game. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is a heavy favorite to win the whole thing, but he’ll be competing against Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and more. This being an open tournament, LIV Golf players will also be competing. Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau are sure to make some noise this weekend. Oh right, and a player by the name of Tiger Woods will be joining the field this year. He’ll be among the first golfers to tee off on Thursday, making that Featured Group one to set your alarm for.

Those are just a few of the big names that will show up. The U.S. Open is a big tournament, and there are sure to be some big surprises on the way. Maybe one of the amateurs will make a surprise appearance near the top of the leaderboard. Maybe we’ll see a wild hole-in-one or par save from the deep rough. That’s the fun of these majors. Everyone is going all out, so anything can happen, and you’ll be able to stream it all on Peacock.
