USMNT vs. Trinidad and Tobago: U.S. Soccer on Peacock
On Thursday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, the U.S. men's national team will face off against Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals.
The U.S. men’s national team is looking to capture their third straight CONCACAF Nations League title (defeating Mexico 3-2 in 2019-20 and Canada 2-0 in 2022-23).
Back in June, the USMNT defeated Canada 2-0 to win back-to-back titles. The heroics came from an unlikely place, as Chris Richards and Folarin Balogun became the first and second players to score their first international goals in a final.
The U.S. has a 21-3-4 all-time record versus Trinidad and Tobago. The USMNT’s 21 victories against Trinidad are the USMNT’s second most against any international opponent (23 wins vs. Mexico).
The USMNT will be without their star player Christian Pulisic, who re-aggravated his left hamstring in AC Milan’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint Germain on November 7.
The last time these two teams played, in the 2023 Gold Cup group stage, the USMNT defeated Trinidad 6-0 behind a first half hat trick from Jesus Ferreira. Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Brandon Vasquez contributed with second half goals as the U.S. clinched the top spot in Group A.
If the USMNT beats Trinidad and Tobago, they will automatically qualify for the 2024 Copa America, South America’s preeminent international tournament which is being hosted in the United States next summer.
The loser can also still qualify via a play-in round, potentially joining the 16-team field for the tournament (10 CONMEBOL nations and 6 CONCACAF guest nations).
At Copa America 2021 in Brazil, Lionel Messi and Argentina defeated Neymar Jr and Brazil 1-0 in the final. Angel di Maria played hero, scoring the match’s only goal in the 22nd minute.
The Premier League is well represented on the USMNT as two different pairs of Prem teammates are on the roster: Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson (Fulham) and Matt Turner and Ethan Horvath (Nottingham Forest). Pulisic also spent four seasons at Chelsea FC before transferring to Milan during the summer transfer window in July.
