The 5x5 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments have 12 teams each, while the 3x3 have 8. Since Basketball debuted as an official Olympic sport in 1936, the U.S. has won a combined 30 medals which is the most of any nation. Los Angeles Laker forward LeBron James returns for his fourth Olympics and will be the oldest player ever to compete on the American men’s team. 3x3 Basketball, played on a half-court and based on street basketball, debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The U.S. men’s team has won 19 total medals, including the last four golds. Ever since the Dream Team of 1992, the roster has included some of the biggest stars in the NBA. The U.S. announced a star-studded roster with LeBron James, Olympic newcomer Steph Curry, and the U.S.’s all-time leading Olympic scorer Kevin Durant, who could break a tie with Carmelo Anthony for his record 4th men’s basketball gold medal.
Women’s Basketball joined the Summer Olympic Games program in 1976 at the Montreal Olympic Games. In Paris, the U.S. women’s team will compete for its eighth straight gold medal, which would set a record for the most-ever in a team sport. American Diana Taurasi, could break her tie with Sue Bird for a record-breaking 6th Olympic basketball gold medal.
