Tennis was part of the first modern Olympics program in 1896 but didn’t become a mainstay until 1988. In 2024, Olympic Tennis will be held at Roland Garros, home of the French Open. Great Britain’s Reginald Doherty is one of the three men who have won four Olympic tennis medals. Williams is one of two women who have won five Olympic tennis medals.
The singles tournaments are 64 players each, the doubles tournaments are 32 doubles each and the mixed doubles tournament is 16 doubles. In this summer’s tennis competition, 38-year-old Rafael Nadal and 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz will partner for the men’s doubles. Nadal is competing at his fourth and final Olympic Games. The men’s doubles medal matches are Aug. 2-3 and the men’s singles medal matches are Aug. 3-4.

Three-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek is the heavy gold medal favorite but will face a tough challenge from 2022 French Open finalist Coco Gauff, who won her first major title at the 2023 US Open.

The 2023 French Open champion took home a bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics but has not medaled since. Representing Serbia, he hopes to change that when he returns to Roland-Garros this summer.

At 15 years old, Coco Gauff defeated Venus Williams at Wimbledon. Gauff won her first Grand Slam singles title at the 2023 U.S. Open and moved up to #2 ranked player in the world in the last year. At 20, she will make her Olympic debut.

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz won the 2022 U.S. Open to become, at 19, the youngest men’s Grand Slam singles champion since Rafael Nadal in 2005. Alcaraz also won the 2024 French Open. This year, he hopes to bring an Olympic gold medal home to Spain.
Tennis
Iga Swiatek became the first Polish player ever to win a Grand Slam singles title at the 2020 French Open, and she did it without losing a set. Swiatek won the French Open again in 2022, 2023, and 2024 and she’ll be hoping for a repeat performance at Roland Garros this summer.
