The Middle follows the endearingly dysfunctional world of Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn), and their three children, Axl (Charlie McDermott), Sue (Eden Sher), and Brick (Atticus Shaffer). The middle-class family resides in the fictional town of Orson, Indiana, and deal with everyday issues – from home life to work challenges to raising kids – that we can all relate to.

Meet the cast and characters of The Middle

Here’s what you need to know about the members of the Heck family.

Frankie Heck

The heart of the Heck family, Frankie (Patricia Heaton) is a working mom who juggles her job with the 24/7 demands of her family. No wonder she’s frazzled and overwhelmed, but she still loves them unconditionally. Frankie narrates the show, which means we get the insightful and hilarious thoughts of a busy American mom.

Mike Heck

Mike (Neil Flynn) is Frankie's husband, a blue-collar man of few words. But when he does speak, he's often the voice of reason for the Heck clan. His love for his family runs deep.

Axl Heck

Axl (Charlie McDermott) is the Hecks’ oldest son. This typical teen likes two things: playing football and lounging around in his underwear – usually the latter. Axl’s pointed sense of humor often gets him into trouble, but he’s charming enough to avoid major wrath.

Sue Heck

Sue (Eden Sher) is the family’s middle child with a surprisingly positive outlook on the world. Dorky and socially awkward, her determination in the face of failure stays steadfast, making her irresistibly lovable.

Brick Heck

Brick (Atticus Shaffer) is the youngest son. A genius, he’s quirky, loves books, is intrigued by fonts, and sometimes communicates in whispers to himself.
