The meaning behind the mockumentary
Filmed and based in Los Angeles from 2009 to 2020, Modern Family follows three interconnected families with different dynamics as they tackle life, growing older, and their relationships with one another.
When brainstorming a new mockumentary sitcom, creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan discussed their own lives and family craziness – and thus Modern Family was born.
Cast and characters
The Pritchett Family
Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill)
The patriarch of the family, Jay may seem stoic most of the time, but he truly cares about his family. With his dry humor and subtle jabs at others, Jay keeps the family going. Jay is the father of Claire and Mitchell, stepdad to Manny, husband to Gloria, and grandfather to a Haley, Alex, Luke, and Lily.
Gloria Delgado-Pritchett (Sofia Vergara)
Gloria is Jay’s second wife and much younger than he is. . A proud immigrant from Colombia, Gloria is an adoring wife and mother to Manny and Joe who’s not afraid to stand up for herself, her loved ones and her heritage.
Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez)
Manny, Gloria’s son and Jay’s stepson, is the soft-spoken, creative member of the family. Super mature for his age, Manny provides great advice to the family and is a romantic at heart. Similar in age to Luke, the two are close friends and attend school together.
The Dunphy Family
Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen)
Claire is Jay’s daughter, Mitchell's older sister, and mom to Haley, Alex, and Luke. A stay-at-home mom for the first few seasons, Claire switches between being an overbearing, anxious mom and hilarious, loving family member. She wants the best in her kids since she was a wild child herself.
Phil Dunphy (Ty Burell)
Phil is a cool dad (debatable). He tries to be hip which often provides amazing one-liners. Since he works as a real estate agent, he has an active part in raising his kids but has an especially strong bond with Luke. His little crush on Gloria and his desire for Jay’s approval are staples in the show.
Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland)
The oldest child of Phil and Claire, Haley’s relationships with boys (especially Dylan) are often a cause of problems between her and Claire. She gets easily embarrassed by her parents and wants to be independent and find her own path forward.
Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter)
Unlike Haley, who cares more about her social life, middle child Alex is the stark opposite. She is more concerned with her academics and is more reserved than her siblings, even as she also deals with typical teenager problems.
Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould)
The youngest child of Claire and Phil, Luke is quite different than his sisters and doesn’t mind doing his own thing. He has humorous adventures and finds himself getting into trouble frequently, often with Manny who becomes his bff.
The Pritchett-Tucker Family
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson)
Mitchell is Claire’s younger brother and is a stark contrast from his dad and sister. More mild and soft-spoken, Mitchell works as a lawyer and often has to deal with tension between himself and his dad over his sexuality.
Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet)
Originally a farmer from Missouri, Cam is Mitchell’s outgoing husband and Lily’s stay-at-home dad. He does various jobs (e.g. clown and football coach) throughout the show but has a heart of gold and is someone the family can always rely on for laughs and support.
Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons)
Lily is Cam and Mitchell’s daughter, adopted from Vietnam in the pilot. She’s just a baby when the show begins, but as the show progresses, she grows into a teenager.
Side Character Cast
Dylan Marshall (Reid Erwing)
Dylan is Haley’s on-again off-again boyfriend whose own life is tumultuous. Phil is a huge fan and wants to be friends with him, but Claire has her reservations.
Joe Pritchett (Jeremy Maguire)
Joe is Gloria and Jay’s son together, born at the end of season 4 and a fun addition to the family.
Andy Bailey (Adam Devine)
One of Hailey’s love interests, Andy is a fun contrast to Dylan. Hired by Gloria to be Joe’s nanny, Andy and Haley grow closer and eventually enter a relationship.
Modern Family Awards
Modern Family has been a comedic success among critics and fans. Over eleven seasons, the show won 92 awards and received 374 nominations. Most notably, Modern Family won 22 Primetime Emmy Awards® including, on multiple occasions, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, and more.
