Despite being in Seventh place, Aston Villa are only one point behind Manchester City in Fifth, which will be enough to secure Champions League qualification thanks to how well England’s elite have performed in Europe this season. With Newcastle directly competing with Villa for the top five, currently five points ahead of them, this match will be a great opportunity for Unai Emery’s men to close the gap between the two teams. Off the back of an exhilarating comeback against PSG that fell just short on Tuesday’s Champions League quarter final second leg, Villa will be energized for Newcastle’s visit to Villa Park this weekend. The Villans have won four straight Premier League games and are playing at arguably their highest level all season. January signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio have lit up Villa Park since their arrivals, and the recent return of Pau Torres from injury has been a major boost for Villa. Emery has rotated his preferred attacking options in recent weeks and he will be spoiled for choice on Saturday. Rashford has been leading the line lately for Villa, but Ollie Watkins is always a threat and a proven Premier League goal scorer.  Morgan Rogers has been superb all season long and captain John McGinn has been the Villans’ talisman for some time now. But Asensio and Jacob Ramsey are other exciting options at Emery’s disposal. Regardless of who starts up front this weekend, Villa’s attack will need to be potent to break down a stubborn Newcastle defense that has three clean sheets in their last five Premier League games. 

Defensively, Villa have been strong in recent weeks. In their last four Premier League matches, the Villans have kept three clean sheets and conceded only one goal. This form will need to continue against a Newcastle attack that has been scoring for fun in recent weeks. 

Winning their last six games in all competitions, Newcastle are one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now. They have scored 14 goals in their last four games and only conceded two. This form has propelled Newcastle into third place in the table, four points ahead of Manchester City in fifth and five points ahead of Chelsea and Aston Villa in sixth and seventh respectively. With six games left to go, they’re in great position to finish in the top five and qualify for next season’s Champions League. A win against Aston Villa on Saturday would improve their chances even further. To do so, they will rely on star forward Alexander Isak and the in-form Harvey Barnes to lead the line against Villa. Isak is tied for second in the golden boot race with 21 goals so far this season in Premier League. Sitting six goals behind Mohamed Salah in first, Isak will be eager to catch him before the season ends. Barnes on the other hand has scored four goals in his last three games and is currently firing on all cylinders. Behind them, Sandro Tonali has proven himself of late as one of the best midfielders in the league with two goals and one assist in his last four matches. His partnership with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes forms one of the most talented midfield trios in all of Europe with all three capable of scoring, assisting, and winning the ball back. If Newcastle can win the midfield battle and provide their forwards with sufficient service against Villa, they can claim all three points on Saturday. 

Defensively, Newcastle have kept two clean sheets in their last four games and conceded only two goals. Dan Burn has filled in for Sven Botman in the center of defense with flying colors, earning an England call-up in the process. Kieran Trippier and Valentino Livramento will provide a consistent threat from both sides of the pitch but will need to be wary of Villa’s creativity and pace on the wing.
