Sci-Fi Flirts With Rom-Com in a New Movie Starring Anthony Mackie and Zoë Chao
The new Peacock Original film If You Were the Last blasts off today!
Can you be more than friends without ruining a good thing? Does a hall pass extend as far as Saturn? And, really, what are the chances of being rescued in space anyway? Such questions are at the center of Peacock's new sci-fi romantic comedy If You Were the Last, streaming today.
Adrift in their broken-down space shuttle with little hope of rescue, the film follows two astronauts, Adam (Anthony Mackie) and Jane (Zoë Chao) who are three years into a NASA mission that has gone very wrong; their ship is broken and drifting between Jupiter and Saturn. Finding ways to pass the time as they become certain that no one is coming to save them, they argue over what to do. One day, Adam poses that maybe they should sleep together; Jane laughs the idea off, but it prompts a flirty debate about whether they're better off spending their remaining days as friends or something more.
If You Were the Last is the feature debut from director Kristian Mercado and was a Narrative Spotlight Selection at SXSW 2023. Screen Rant lauded the film's delivery of "a thoughtful, tender, and humorous romance" and Variety called it "a romantic comedy that revives the screwball formula."
Anthony Mackie also recently starred in the Peacock Original live-action, comedy series Twisted Metal, available to stream now.
