The Cleveland Browns play the Houston Texans in Super Wild Card Weekend on Peacock and NBC

This weekend, NBC and Peacock will be the first media company to broadcast three NFL Playoff Games in a single weekend (a Saturday doubleheader and a Sunday primetime game). To kick off the 2024 NFL Playoffs, Saturday’s Wild Card doubleheader begins in Houston, TX where the Cleveland Browns will take on the hometown Houston Texans.

Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans on Wild Card Saturday

The Cleveland Browns (11–6, 2nd in AFC North, 5th Seed) travel to Houston to take on the AFC South division-winning Texans at NRG Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Browns return to the postseason for the first time since 2020, led by Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Flacco. The Super Bowl XLVII MVP took over for Cleveland in Week 13 and has won four of his five starts. Flacco has no shortage of weapons at his disposal including wide receiver Amari Cooper – who broke the Browns franchise record with 265 receiving yards in Cleveland’s Week 16 matchup versus the Texans. Tight end David Njoku earned his first Pro Bowl selection this season, setting career highs with 81 receptions, 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

In each of his last four games, Flacco has thrown for 300 or more yards and two or more touchdowns. Flacco is no stranger to the postseason, helping lead the Baltimore Ravens to a championship in Super Bowl XLVII versus the San Francisco 49ers. He has a career 10–5 record in the playoffs, with eight of those victories coming on the road. Flacco is also 5–0 as a starter in the Wild Card Round. On defense, All Pro defensive end Myles Garrett has led the charge for a dominant Browns defense, ranking first in the NFL in yards allowed per game (270.2) this season.

The Houston Texans (10–7, 1st in AFC South, 5th Seed) won the AFC South for the first time since 2019, defeating their division rival the Indianapolis Colts last Saturday in a playoff-clinching game. Rookie CJ Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, threw for a remarkable 4,108 yards this season, becoming just the fifth rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 4,000 yards. He joins an elite list including Andrew Luck, Justin Herbert, Cam Newton, and Jameis Winston. If that wasn’t enough, he also became just the fourth rookie quarterback to record a passer rating of 100 or higher (100.8). It’s been a special first season as head coach for DeMeco Ryans. After starting the season 0–2, they turned it all around, finishing 10–5 in their last 15 contests.

Stroud looks to be the favorite to win AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year, edging out Los Angeles Rams rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua. In Week 9, Stroud put the league on notice, throwing for a rookie passing record 470 yards in their 39–37 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That broke the previous record of 433 held by former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Want more? He also became just the third player in NFL history to throw for that many passing yards, five touchdowns and ZERO interceptions, joining Ben Roethlisberger (2014) and Y.A. Tittle (1962).

The Texans and Browns met in Week 16, when the Browns defeated the Texans 36–22 behind a franchise record 265 yards receiving from wide receiver Amari Cooper. The two teams are tied 7–7 all-time.

Quarterback Case Keenum started for Stroud, who didn’t play in that Week 16 battle vs Cleveland with a concussion. The Browns defense held Keenum and the Texans offense scoreless  – until third string QB Davis Mills led Houston to two garbage time touchdown drives.
