The Creation of New Girl
Writer Elizabeth Meriwether was approached by 20th Century Fox Television to develop a sitcom after her success with other rom-coms. Using her personal experience, Meriwether pitched an idea about a girl moving in with three men as they explore careers, love, friendship, and everything that comes with it — and the rest is history.
Filmed in Los Angeles, New Girl aired on Fox from 2011 to 2018 over seven seasons and 146 episodes. Unlike other sitcoms, New Girl was not filmed in front of a studio audience. The show follows Jess, a Los Angeles schoolteacher, who moves in with Nick, Schmidt, and Coach after a breakup. Along with Winston, who eventually moves into the apartment, and Cece, Jess’ best friend, the group tackles their 30s and the unpredictability that life throws at you.
