Notre Dame vs Army: College Football on Peacock

The No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9–1, Independent) face the Army Black Knights in their biggest test before a potential berth in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. After losing 16-14 to Northern Illinois on Sept 7, the Irish have rattled off eight straight wins including victories over Louisville and Navy, both AP Top 25-ranked opponents at the time of those games. Back on Oct. 26 in Northern New Jersey, the Fighting Irish knocked off Army’s biggest rival, the Navy Midshipmen 51–14. Navy had no answer for the Irish, who forced six turnovers on the day and held the Midshipmen to just seven points in the second half. Irish quarterback Riley Leonard is a dual threat machine, throwing for just under 1800 passing yards along with 12 touchdowns through the air this season. On the ground, he leads the team in rushing touchdowns (13) and is second in rushing yards with 641. Sophomore RB Jeremiyah Love is no stranger to the end zone either, racking up 12 touchdowns on the year. In head coach Marcus Freeman’s third year with the program, the Irish have continued to get better and better. After going 9–4 and 10–3 in his first two seasons, the Irish are on the verge of a berth in the CFB Playoff. Under former head coach Brian Kelly, Notre Dame lost in back-to-back years in the old four-team format in 2021 and 2022. A victory this weekend gets them one step closer to competing for their first National Championship since 1988.

No. 18 Army (9-0, 1st in AAC) is the top rushing team in the country, averaging just under 335 yards per game on the ground. The Black Knights are one of just three remaining undefeated teams in the country, along with the Big Ten’s Oregon Ducks (11–0) and Indiana Hoosiers (10–0). This will be by far the biggest test for Army this season, as the Irish are the only ranked opponent on their schedule. The Black Knights have a lot to be excited about, as they’ve won 13 straight games going back to last season and have already clinched a ticket to their first American Athletic Conference championship game. They’ll take on Tulane Green Wave on Fri, Dec 6th. They joined the conference this season after being independent for their entire history, going all the way back to 1890. Quarterback Bryson Daily does it all for the Black Knights, leading the team in rushing touchdowns (21) and yards (1062). Sophomore RB Kanye Udoh is second on the team with nine rushing touchdowns. Daily has only thrown 51 passes all season long with seven of them for touchdowns. The Black Knights make their living on the ground, as they rank last nationally in passing offense (85 passing yards per game). Army’s last undefeated season (not including ties) was back in 1949 (9–0). They’ll look to keep the perfect season going this weekend.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series vs Army 38–8–4. The Irish have also won the past 15 meetings. Notre Dame and Army have actually faced off at Yankee Stadium, the home of the 27-time World Series Champion New York Yankees, 23 total times – 22 at the original ballpark (1925-29, 1931-6, 1969) and once at the current stadium in 2010.
