Team USA Men’s Basketball looks to capture their fifth consecutive gold medal in Paris. The competition begins Sunday July 28 when they take on the Serbian national team. Reigning 2024 NBA MVP and NBA champion Nikola Jokic is expected to be on the roster.

Team USA Women’s Basketball begins their quest for a record-breaking eighth consecutive gold medal on Monday July 29, against Japan, the runners up at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The seven consecutive gold medals won by the U.S. Women is tied with the Team USA Men for the most by any country in a team sport in Olympics history.

In both the Men’s and Women’s competition, twelve teams will be split into three groups of four teams with a single round robin in each group. The first and second place teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The two best performing third place teams, based on points, will also advance.

Those top eight teams will face off in the knockout stage (one game elimination) with the gold medal game between the remaining two teams to determine the champion.

12 countries qualify for the Olympic tournament. On the Men’s side, the following teams have qualified so far: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Serbia, South Sudan, and the United States. The four remaining spots will be determined at the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in July.

On the Women’s side, the 12 teams are: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia, Spain, and the United States.

When are the 2024 Paris Olympics Basketball events?

Basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics is scheduled to take place between July 26 and August 11. You can watch every game, including Team USA Men’s and Women’s Basketball as they look to defend their crowns as gold medalists.

Who has the most medals in Olympic Basketball history?

The United States has dominated in both Men’s and Women’s Olympic Basketball.

The U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball team has won 16 of 19 Olympic gold medals including seven straight wins from 1936–1968. The U.S. Women’s team has done damage themselves, winning eight gold medals in the 10 Olympic Games they have competed in — including seven straight wins headed into the 2024 games.

Who will compete for Team USA Men's Basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Team USA Men’s Basketball brings arguably their most star-studded roster since the 1992 Dream Team, headlined by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Joel Embiid. The roster has four players who previously have won an NBA MVP (James, Durant, Curry, Embiid), 11 2024 NBA All Stars, and 84 combined prior all-star selections on the roster.

James will compete in his fourth Olympic Games and first since 2012. Curry will make his Olympic debut this summer (two-time FIBA Basketball world cup champion), while Embiid and Leonard will make their USA Basketball national team debuts.

Who will compete for Team USA Women's Basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Team USA Women’s Basketball looks for their seventh straight Olympic gold medal. The 2024 roster will have plenty of star power, headlined by WNBA superstars Diana Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, and Breanna Stewart.

Taurasi, 42 years old, is in line to become the oldest Olympic Basketball player ever. Paris will be her record-breaking sixth Olympic Games, the most of all time.

She has played more games than any other women’s player in U.S. Olympic Basketball history (38) and is second in points with 414, trailing only Lisa Leslie (488).

Wilson is the 2022 FIBA World Cup MVP and a two-time WNBA MVP. Breanna Stewart is the Tokyo Olympics MVP.

Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young will also compete for Team USA after winning Olympic gold in the women’s 3x3 tournament in Tokyo 2020.

How many gold medals does the United States have for Olympic Basketball?

The U.S. has 16 gold medals for the men and 9 gold medals for the women, for a total of 25 gold medals.

Team USA Men have won Olympic Basketball gold medals in the following years: 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1976, 1984, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Who played on the 1992 Dream Team for Team USA Basketball?

The 1992 Dream Team was the first Olympic Basketball team to include NBA players on the roster. Prior to 1992, FIBA rules specifically prevented NBA players from participating in the Olympics, allowing only amateurs to compete.

The 1992 U.S. Olympic Basketball team was one of the most dominant ever, beating their opponents by an average of 44 points en route to the gold medal against Croatia.

That team had three previous MVPs — Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan.

Eleven of the 12 players on the roster (excluding Christian Laettner) and three of the four coaches (all except PJ Carlesimo) have been elected to the Hall of Fame as individuals.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame called the Dream Team "the greatest collection of basketball talent on the planet."
