Now eight weeks into the Premier League season, teams are starting to emerge as potential title race contenders. Both Arsenal and Liverpool are at in the top four and looking to build momentum going forward. In what promises to be a pivotal match, we set our sights on North London where the Gunners take on the Reds.
Arsenal v. Liverpool
With 17 points after eight games, Arsenal currently sit in 3rd place in the Premier League table, level on points with Aston Villa in 4th but ahead on goal difference. Despite a relatively strong start to the season, Arsenal find themselves behind both first-place Liverpool and the unbeaten Manchester City. A disappointing loss to Bournemouth last week was exacerbated by another red card for the team, this time for one of their best defenders William Saliba, who will now miss this week’s matchup. Plus, two of Arsenal’s most creative players, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard, are both nursing injuries. With all of these setbacks, Arsenal will need big performances this weekend from Kai Havertz, Gabriel, and Declan Rice. Havertz’s hold-up play, Gabriel’s defensive solidity, and Rice’s ability to command the midfield will be critical in helping Arsenal avoid another early loss and remain in the title race.
On the other hand, Liverpool sit firmly in first place with seven wins in their first eight games, building momentum after an important win over Chelsea last week. Mohamed Salah has remained a consistent spark for Liverpool this season, providing five goals and five assists in just eight matches. He will look to maintain this recent form at the weekend against a depleted Arsenal defense. On the other end of the field, Liverpool’s defense leads the league in both clean sheets and goals conceded so far this season, only giving up three goals in eight games. Despite losing Alisson Becker to injury, Liverpool’s defense has not faltered, due in part to the powerful partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Liverpool will rely on their defensive prowess and Salah’s link-up play to lead the team to a victory that would see them go seven points clear of Arsenal, a valuable lead this early in the season. Given Arsenal’s injuries and Saliba’s unavailability for this weekend’s game, it is a great opportunity for Liverpool to take advantage and solidify their title charge.
