Aston Villa and Bournemouth go head-to-head after producing impressive results against Big Six clubs last weekend. Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke will lead each club into battle as the two in-form England internationals continue their quest for the Premier League Golden Boot. Join Peacock on Sunday at Villa Park to witness all the action.
Aston Villa v. Bournemouth
No Premier League side has surpassed expectations more than Aston Villa this campaign. The team has been comfortably positioned in the Top Five since the end of September, and they currently stand at fourth in the table with five games remaining. Villa is on pace to achieve their best Premier League finish since their fabled 1992/1993 season where they ended in 2nd behind Manchester United. There is a realistic chance for them to play in the Champions League if they can ward off Tottenham who are three points behind with a game in hand.
Aston Villa are flying this week after two historical performances in both domestic and European competition. Last weekend the team met with an Arsenal side that had not lost or trailed in a Premier League game since 2023. After warding off numerous chances from the Gunners, the Villans stormed in front with minutes to spare after Lucas Digne launched a cross past Arsenal’s defense that found its way to an unmarked Leon Bailey at the back post. Minutes later, Youri Tielemans intercepted a pass by Jorginho and immediately lifted the ball through to Ollie Watkins, who outpaced Emile Smith Rowe and delivered a stunning chipped goal that secured Villa’s 2–0 win at the Emirates.
Aston Villa’s most recent match came Thursday in an exhilarating quarterfinal tie against Lille in the Europa Conference League. Villa entered the second leg with a 2–1 lead but lost it when Lille scored twice, bringing the score to 2–3 on aggregate. With elimination looming, Matty Cash fired the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box and forced the game into extra time. The bout concluded in a penalty shootout that saw Emiliano Martínez make two decisive saves to send Villa through to the semifinals in epic fashion. With Manchester City and Arsenal’s eliminations in the Champions League, and Liverpool and West Ham’s Europe League exits, Villa are the last remaining Premier League representatives in European competitions.
The Villans’ squad is flush with talent who pose threats to Bournemouth. Watkins has been brilliant as the team’s best player throughout the season with 19 goals, only one behind league leaders Erling Haaland (Man City) and Cole Palmer (Chelsea). In addition to his scoring prowess, Watkins has created chances for his teammates with 10 assists this season, leading the league alongside Pascal Groß and Kieran Trippier. Villa will be without Nicolò Zaniolo and Douglas Luiz for Sunday’s match.
Bournemouth has put together a string of impressive performances in the past several weeks, garnering four wins, two draws, and a single loss in seven games. Last Saturday, Bournemouth hosted Manchester United and took an early lead thanks to Dominic Solanke and Marcos Senesi. Senesi dispossessed Alejandro Garnacho in the midfield and delivered the ball to Solanke, who cleverly outmaneuvered United defender Willy Kambwala and found an open shot that he slotted into the bottom left corner of the net. After Bruno Fernandes brought the score level, Bournemouth retook the lead when Justin Kluivert scored a well-crafted goal at the near post thanks to another assist by Senesi. Though Bournemouth eventually conceded a penalty to United in the second half and the match finished 2–2, the Cherries left Vitality Stadium having nearly scored on multiple occasions from attempts by Luis Sinisterra, Dango Ouattara, and Milos Kerkez. Bournemouth sits at 13th in the table, and a win on Sunday could potentially propel them into the Top 10.
With Solanke’s 17th goal of the season against United last weekend, the English striker passed Joshua King to become the Bournemouth’s highest goal scorer in a Premier League season. Solanke has found the back of the net in three of his last five games, and he is primed to extend his record against an Aston Villa side he scored against in December. Kluivert has shown a tendency to score in the most crucial moments of games, and manager Andoni Iraola will need him to step up after Sinisterra aggravated his lingering hamstring injury against United. Behind Kluivert, the defensive midfield partnership between Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook will pose problems for Villa on both ends of the pitch. The pair have amassed seven assists between them and are reliable, unrelenting playmakers who can apply sustained pressure on opponents for the full 90 minutes. Illia Zabarnyi has started every Premier League match this season as one of Bournemouth’s most consistent players while Senesi and Kerkez had outstanding performances in the last match. Together with Adam Smith and goalkeeper Neto, they will look to suppress the formidable attacking options that Villa has to offer. Sunday will mark the return of Ghanian attacker Antoine Semenyo, who has been out with an injury for two weeks. Semenyo scored in the December game against Villa at Vitality Stadium, and his appearance in the lineup could be the difference-maker for the visitors this weekend.
