The Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs brings us the ultimate thriller on Sunday night. Cap off a weekend of football in Tampa Bay, FL where the Washington Commanders take on the hometown Buccaneers.
Washington Commanders vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Commanders (12–5, 2nd in NFC East, No. 6 Seed) punched their ticket to the playoffs just two weeks ago on Sunday Night Football in an overtime banger against the Atlanta Falcons. You really couldn’t ask for a better rookie season from quarterback Jayden Daniels. He’s thrown for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Not bad for your first year out of college. These teams played each other all the way back in Week 1, and while the Buccaneers won that contest, this isn’t the same Commanders team. Daniels has only gotten better week after week, becoming more familiar with the offensive weapons at his disposal. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is responsible for 13 of those touchdowns this season, and tight end Zach Ertz has caught another seven. With reliable receivers like that, there should be no doubt about the Commanders’ ability to put up points in this game. Is this the beginning of a dynasty? It’s too early to say, but the Commanders look like they could be playoff staples for years to come. If they can take advantage of a banged-up Buccaneers defense this week, Washington will be through to the next round.
The Buccaneers (10–7, 1st in NFC South, No. 3 Seed) have won their division for the fourth straight year. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has had another phenomenal year with the team, throwing for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Is that INT total a little high? Sure, but when you’re throwing that many touchdowns, mistakes just don’t matter that much. Wide receiver Mike Evans notched his 11th straight 1,000-yard season while running back Bucky Irving ran for 1,122 yards with eight touchdowns. This Bucs team is an offensive powerhouse, and it’ll be hard for any team to keep up with them in the playoffs. On the other side of the ball, head coach Todd Bowles likes to have his players blitz early and often. We can expect to see more of that aggression on defense this weekend, but with some key players out, including safety Jordan Whitehead, they may not be able to stop the Commanders as effectively. That means we’re in for an offensive footrace, and if Mayfield can keep up the pace he’s set all season, we could see the Bucs in the divisional round next week.
