Fresh off a crucial 2-0 victory against Manchester United, Arsenal looks to keep up their title chase when they take on a difficult Fulham side in Matchweek 15 of the Premier League

Fulham v. Arsenal

Sitting in sixth place with three wins in their last five games, Fulham have had a great start to the season. They are only four points behind Manchester City in fourth place and one point behind Brighton in fifth, whom they just beat 3–1 on Thursday. Marco Silva is an early candidate for coach of the season and given the way his side are playing, he hopes they can give Arsenal trouble in front of the home support. Fulham will rely on Alex Iwobi and new summer signing Emile Smith Rowe to lead their attack. With two goals this past Thursday against Brighton, Iwobi has been in hot form with three goals and two assists in his last four Premier League games. He has arguably become Fulham’s talisman and his work rate and creativity will be crucial if the Cottagers hope to score against a stingy Arsenal defense. Given his previous stint with the Gunners, Iwobi will have extra motivation in this match to prove his old team was wrong to sell him. Another ex-Arsenal player, though much more recently, Smith Rowe will also be eager to leave a mark against his old team. With three goals and two assists so far in the league, Smith Rowe has become one of Fulham’s most important players this season. His movement and dribbling ability are sure to cause Arsenal problems. If Iwobi and Smith Rowe can provide quality service to whoever is starting up front for Fulham, whether it’s Raúl Jiménez or Rodrigo Muniz, the Cottagers will be dangerous on the counter.

On the other side of the ball, Fulham have been prone to conceding goals. With only two clean sheets in the league this season, Fulham have struggled for consistency defensively. To make matters worse, one of Fulham’s most valuable defenders Joachim Andersen is nursing an injury and will likely be out against Arsenal. Given their defensive setup against Brighton, Silva will likely turn to Issa Diop and Calvin Bassey as the preferred center-back partnership. Left-back and captain Antonee Robinson will face the toughest test, going toe to toe with one of the most in-form players in the league: Bukayo Saka. Robinson will be vital in leading Fulham’s defense. Together with Bernd Leno, another ex-Arsenal man raring to go for this match, the pair will face a difficult challenge in quieting Arsenal’s potent attack.

Now with four wins in four consecutive games in all competitions, Arsenal looks to maintain their momentum with a win against a London rival. The Gunners’ victory over Manchester United on Wednesday cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to seven points after the Reds’ draw against Newcastle. With Liverpool facing another tough test at Goodison Park in the Merseyside Derby, Arsenal hopes to capitalize yet again this weekend. To do so, they will rely on Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard to spark their attack. It’s no coincidence that Arsenal’s four-game win streak has coincided with Ødegaard’s return to full fitness. The Gunners look a different team with him healthy, having scored a whopping 15 goals in their last four games. His link-up play with Saka has caused opponents many problems and Arsenal will need their pair of star players to be firing against Fulham. Another big reason for Arsenal’s impressive stretch in front of goal has been their success from corners. Both goals against United came from corners and to be honest, the Gunners could have scored three or four from these set pieces. Arsenal’s brilliance from corners has become a talking point for the entire league this season. If Saka and Declan Rice can maintain the quality of their deliveries, the Gunners will continue to terrorize defenses.

Defensively, Arsenal have regained their solidity from last season in recent weeks. With two clean sheets in their last three Premier League matches, Arsenal have become a difficult team to score against. Manchester United never really looked like they were going to score on Wednesday, even with Arsenal defender Gabriel out. William Saliba was arguably the best player on the field against United and his presence, together with that of David Raya, will be vital in keeping yet another clean sheet against Fulham on Sunday.
