Olympic Archery

With archery being one of the oldest sports still practiced today, one would suspect it would have been a part of the Ancient Greek Olympics. However, archery actually made its Olympic debut at the second Modern Olympics in Paris in 1900. It’s only fitting, then, for there to be such an exciting field heading to Paris this week.

How will archery work at the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Five different events compose Olympic archery: two individual competitions for men and women, a men's team competition, a women’s team competition, and a mixed-gender team competition, which is returning to the Olympics after making its debut at the last Olympics in Tokyo.

To beat their opponents, archers must shoot arrows as close as possible to the center of a 4-foot target positioned 230 feet away. The sport requires a huge amount of discipline, dexterity, and concentration — even the slightest tremor or momentary lapse in concentration can send an arrow way off target.

In individual competitions, 64 archers compete in a single-elimination knockout bracket to the final, and in the team events, 16 teams of two compete in a knockout bracket.

Where in Paris will Olympic archery take place?

Like athletics and road cycling, the Olympic archery competitions will take place at the Esplanade des Invalides. Located in the heart of Paris, this vast garden flanked by trees is in the shadow of the iconic dome of the Hôtel des Invalides. Built in 1678 as a military hospital, the complex today includes French military history museums and monuments, and even the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte. It only makes sense for Les Invalides to be the home of archery, a sport of huge historic military significance.

Which Team USA athletes should I look out for?

On the women’s side, Casey Kaufhold is an incredibly exciting medal prospect for Team USA, and Paris will mark her second Olympics. This past year, she has attained the no. 1 world ranking in women’s archery — the first American to ever do so.

On the men’s side, Brady Ellison will be returning for his fourth Olympics in Paris. Long considered one of the world’s best archers, Ellison has won two silvers and bronze at the Olympics, but this year his target is gold.

What does the international field look like?

South Korea has long dominated the sport of Archery on a global level, and this year is no different, with their national team being the ones to beat. To give some context, since South Korea first participated in the event in 1984, they have received an impressive 27 out of 39 gold medals awarded, and their current talent bench is so deep that the 3-time gold medal winner in Tokyo, An San, missed qualifying for the women’s national team.

Lim Si-hyeon, ranked No. 2 in the world behind USA’s Casey Kaufhold as of April, leads the South Korean women's team, and on the men’s side Kim Je-deok and Kim Woo-jin are returning to the Olympics after winning gold for South Korea in Tokyo
