How to Watch Sport Climbing at the 2024 Paris Olympics: Stream on Peacock LIVE, Event Times, and More
The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway, but some fan favorite sports are just getting started. Find out everything you need to know about Olympic Sport Climbing.
It’s been a thrilling 2024 Paris Olympics so far, and there’s plenty more on the way. At time of writing, there are still some sports that haven’t even started yet. That includes some highly anticipated events like Sport Climbing. Whether you’re an expert climber yourself or just want to see what it looks like on the Olympic level, we’ll give you all the info you need to enjoy Sport Climbing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
What is Sport Climbing?
Sport Climbing is a relatively new event on the Olympic program. It first featured in 2018 during the Youth Olympic Games before its official debut in 2021 in Tokyo. The sport is immensely popular with climbing gyms all over the world.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sport Climbing is divided into three formats: Bouldering, speed, and lead. Bouldering sends athletes up 4.5m-high walls without ropes. They must reach the top in as few attempts as possible. Speed is a one-on-one race up a 15m-high wall with five degrees of inclination. Athletes must be precise in their climbing, but not too slow or they risk being left behind by their opponent. Lead events also send athletes up a 15m-high wall, but there’s a twist. They’ve never seen the route before. They have to quickly find the best path up the wall and adapt to any unforeseen challenges. All three formats promise excitement, drama, and explosivity all the way through.
What athletes should I watch for in Olympic Sport Climbing?
Two Sport Climbing stars of Team USA you definitely want to look out for are Natalia Grossman and Brooke Raboutou. Grossman is making her Olympic debut and is competing in the Women’s Boulder & Lead events. She previously ranked first in Bouldering at this year’s Climbing World Cup. Raboutou will be competing in her second Olympics, also in the Women’s Boulder and Lead events. In Tokyo, she finished fifth in the combined event. In Paris, she’s going for a medal. Joining them on Team USA are speed climbers Emma Hunt and Piper Kelly, and on the Men’s side, we have boulder and lead climbers Colin Duffy and Jessy Grupper, as well as speed climbers Zachary Hammer and Sam Watson.
International climbers you’ll want to watch include Czechia’s Adam Ondra, who was a favorite to win gold in Tokyo, but an uncharacteristic off day kept him away from the podium entirely. He's aiming to make a huge comeback in Paris and if he does, the whole world will be cheering him on. Also make sure to keep an eye on Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret. In 2019 she won all six events of the Bouldering World Cup season. In 2021, she took Olympic gold in Tokyo. She’s out for her second gold medal, and she has a good chance of getting it. Garnbret might just be the GOAT of this sport.
