The 2024 Paris Olympics are finally here. The greatest athletes in the world are now in Paris to represent their countries in a huge variety of sports. That includes ones we don’t normally get a chance to see in other years. Equestrian is the ultimate test of a horse’s and rider’s skill. It’s such a fascinating sport, you might get hooked after watching just one event. If Equestrian has become your new two-week obsession, we have all the information you need to enjoy your new favorite sport.
Is Equestrian an Olympic Sport?
Yes, and it has been for a very long time. Equestrian events date back to Ancient Greece, and were meant to build a partnership between horse and rider. Dressage was used to train horses for war, and the ancient Olympic Games held chariot races. (We don’t do that anymore for obvious reasons.) The sport has been a part of the modern Olympic Games since 1900. Women started participating in the dressage event for the first time in 1952 and in 1964, women started competing with men in all Equestrian events. It is still the only entirely mixed-gender sport in the Olympic Games.
How many Equestrian events are there in the Olympics?
Equestrian at the Olympics is divided into three disciplines: Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing. Jumping sends horses and riders through a timed obstacle course. Competitors are given a time penalty for every obstacle missed. Dressage requires horses to perform complicated, artistic maneuvers set to music. Competitors are judged on how easily and fluidly they can maneuver around the course. Eventing combines both disciplines and adds a cross-country component. Competitors are sent down a long course consisting of natural and man-made obstacles. Only the most versatile horse and rider pairs have a chance at winning gold.
How high do Equestrian horses jump?
While the average horse jump tops out around 3 feet, Olympic Equestrian horses have been known to reach heights of 7 feet. They need to, since the tallest obstacle is two meters, or six and a half feet.
How do athletes qualify for Equestrian at the Olympics?
Olympic qualification is a two-year process for Equestrian athletes. Athlete-horse pairs must win or rank highly in FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) events starting in 2022. They can qualify in teams or as individual horse-rider pairs.
Who is competing for Team USA in Equestrian?
Team USA has three athlete-horse pairs per discipline competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In Jumping, they are Steffen Peters riding Suppenkasper, Adrienne Lyle, riding Helix, Marcus Orlob, riding Jane. In Dressage, the pairs are Kent Farrington riding Greya, Laura Kraut riding Baloutinue, and McLain Ward riding Ilex. And the pairs for Eventing are Will Coleman riding Diarado, Boyd Martin riding Fedarman B, and Caroline Pamukcu riding HSH Blake.
Which other Equestrian Athletes should I watch for?
You absolutely don’t want to miss a chance to see Julien Epaillard in action. Nicknamed The Flying Frenchman, he will compete in Jumping events. Also competing in the jumping events will be Sweden’s Henrik von Eckermann. He took the gold medal in Tokyo in Team Jumping and hopes to do it again in his fourth Olympic appearance. Ben Maher will also be competing in Jumping events for England. He has two gold medals, one for Individual Jumping in Tokyo, and one for Team Jumping in London. Finally, there’s Swiss jumper Steve Guerdat. He won medals in both Beijing and London, and hopes to earn another one in Paris.
Where will Equestrian events take place?
While many events will take place inside stadiums, Paris wanted to bring the events out into the city itself and its surrounding areas. Equestrian athletes will compete out in front of the Palace of Versailles.
