Man United v. Liverpool
Manchester United have been on a roll throughout the first three months of 2024 and have won all but three of their fixtures since the beginning of January. Their most notable victory of the season came in a back-and-forth affair against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinals last month, which ended 4-3 following an Amad Diallo winner in the final seconds of extra time. The electrifying match was an instant classic that the sixth-place Red Devils hope to build upon in their quest for a Top 4 finish. Their most recent game was an eventful and enthralling matchup against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and United nearly came away with three points until Cole Palmer scored two goals in quick succession at the end of added time. Emerging victorious against Liverpool will greatly increase the Red Devils’ chances of qualifying for European competition next season. Manager Erik ten Hag will field his best side to do just that.
Many of Man United’s attacking chances have come from 19-year-old Alejandro Garnacho, who has scored a total of nine goals in all competitions this season. The Argentine winger has become a vital component of United’s threat level in the final third of the season. His tenacity and constant pressure against Chelsea earned him two goals and the designation of United’s best player of the match. Fellow young talent Rasmus Højlund has also earned praise for his contributions, finding the back of the net six times in five consecutive Premier League games before sustaining a muscle injury in late February. Marcus Rashford scored the last time United faced Liverpool and will round out the team’s front three after coming on as a substitute in Thursday’s game. Captain Bruno Fernandes leads the team in assists and will be United’s most important playmaker in midfield alongside breakout talent Kobbie Mainoo.
The main factor holding back Manchester United this season has been the sheer quantity of injuries the team has suffered, particularly regarding defenders. Raphaël Varane and Jonny Evans were subbed off prematurely against Chelsea and will be unavailable against Liverpool. Earlier in the week, Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelöf incurred injuries of their own. United will be without four of their center backs on Sunday, with left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, and defensive midfielder Casemiro already on an exhaustive injury list.
Liverpool enters the weekend in first place with a two-point advantage over Arsenal and three-point lead over Manchester City. The Reds clawed themselves into pole position after defeating last-place Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday by a margin of 3–1. Though the Blades equalized in the 58th minute from an own goal, Liverpool retook the lead with an absolute rocket from Alexis Mac Allister and sealed the victory with a 90’ header from Cody Gakpo. Manager Jürgen Klopp has been an inspiration for Liverpool in his final season with the club, reigniting a fire in his players after last season’s fifth-place finish. Only two teams have bested Liverpool in league play since the campaign began in August, and the Reds will look to defend their impressive record with a win on Sunday. Liverpool players and fans alike have been yearning to redeem their FA Cup loss to United for the past month, and three points could be what they need to secure their position as Premier League title frontrunners.
Mohamed Salah’s legacy as a Liverpool icon has been bolstered by yet another brilliant season. The Egyptian ranks second in Premier League goals with 16 and fourth in assists with nine. He serves as the Reds’ most dangerous asset with his pace, dribbling, and legendary left foot. Supplementing Salah in attack are Uruguay striker Darwin Núñez and Colombian winger Luis Díaz, who together account for 18 goals and 11 assists in the league. Central midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have surpassed expectations in their debut season for Liverpool, and captain Virgil Van Dijk commands a back line that has impeded offenses with calculated defending from Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley.
Liverpool will be missing a selection of key players for the weekend. Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, forward/left-winger Diogo Jota, and keeper Alisson have been ruled out as they recover from injuries. Center-back Joël Matip and midfielder Thiago are out for remainder of the season.
