Off the back of a massive win in the North London Derby, Arsenal hope to further close the gap between themselves and first-place Liverpool with a victory against Aston Villa this weekend in the Premier League

Arsenal v Aston Villa

After a difficult run of form that included getting knocked out of the FA Cup and going down 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup matchup with Newcastle, Arsenal bounced back on Wednesday with a win against one of their fiercest rivals. With a Liverpool draw at Nottingham Forest, Arsenal cut the lead at the top of the table to only four points. They will be hoping to close in even further with a victory this weekend. The Gunners will be looking for revenge against Villa given the circumstances of their previous meeting at the Emirates last season. Aston Villa’s 2-0 victory against Arsenal in April 2024 helped solidify the Premier League title for Manchester City, something the Gunners surely haven’t forgotten about.

To win this time around, Arsenal will need to be more prolific in front of goal than they have in recent weeks. Clearly missing their talisman Bukayo Saka, who is still out with injury, and the presence of a proven, clinical striker, Arsenal have struggled to find the back of the net. The Gunners haven’t scored more than two goals in a match in their last four games and that’s not due to a lack of trying. Arsenal have consistently created scoring opportunities but have lacked the composure in front of goal to finish them. Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard will likely lead the line for Arsenal this weekend, and the Gunners will need them to be clinical. However, Arsenal have looked most dangerous from set pieces, arguably for the entire season. Scoring yet again from a corner against Spurs on Wednesday, Arsenal will maintain a constant threat from set pieces against Villa. If Arsenal hope to secure all three points against Aston Villa, they will aim to pile on the pressure from kickoff and score an early goal to get their home fans behind them.

Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last three Premier League matches, having not lost a game yet in 2025. However, they currently sit at 7th place on the table, level on points with Manchester City in 6th, and three points away from Newcastle in 4th. A win at the Emirates this weekend would be massive for Villa in their hunt for a Champions League place this season. The Villans will rely on Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers to lead the break against Arsenal this weekend. Although Watkins lost his starting place in early December, he seems to have regained it since Jhon Duran’s red card against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Since his re-entry into the starting eleven, Watkins has provided two goals and two assists in four games in all competitions. He will look to continue building his form at the Emirates, where he scored last season in their 2-0 victory. Morgan Rogers has been arguably Aston Villa’s best player this season. With six goals and four assists in the league, Rogers has been vital to Villa’s success. His pace and power with the ball at his feet have been instrumental for Villa, and they will look to him to spark the counter.

Aston Villa will need to be stout defensively. Arsenal will bring on the pressure from the beginning of the game, but if Villa can survive the early onslaught of the first 20 minutes or so, they can take something from this match. Emiliano Martinez is one of the most in-form goalkeepers in the entire league right now and his shot-stopping will be critical. With Tyrone Mings finally back from his long-term injury, his leadership and experience at the back will be crucial in organizing Villa’s defense. His partnership with Ezri Konsa will be tested frequently, but if the pair can keep Arsenal’s forwards quiet and defend effectively against set pieces, Villa may grab at least one point at the Emirates.
