Sitting firmly in first place, Liverpool will look to build a further lead over their title challengers when they host Fulham in  Premier League Matchweek 16.

Liverpool v. Fulham

Four points ahead of second-place Chelsea and six points ahead of third-place Arsenal despite having a game in hand, Liverpool have gained a strong lead at the top of the table. Unbeaten in all competitions since a loss to Nottingham Forest in mid-September, Arne Slot has far exceeded expectations in his inaugural season for the Reds. After securing a sixth straight win in the Champions League this week against Girona, Slot hopes to add to this season’s success with a win against Fulham. To do so, he will rely on Mohammed Salah to maintain his red-hot form. With six goals in his last five games in all competitions, Salah has been playing lights out in what could be his last season for Liverpool. Whenever the team scores, Salah is usually involved, but he will face a difficult test against Fulham’s Antonee Robinson who was able to keep Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka relatively quiet just last weekend. Supporting Salah, any combination of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and potentially Diogo Jota (if he’s deemed fit enough) will form a potent attack against a Fulham defense that has been prone to conceding goals.

Defensively, Liverpool lead the league in clean sheets with seven shutouts on the year and three in their last five games in all competitions. However, they will likely be without one of their best defenders in Ibrahima Konate, who may not return to the side until January.  Joe Gomez has filled in admirably alongside Virgil van Dijk in Konate’s absence. The center-back pair will need to be stout against Fulham’s elusive Raul Jimenez.

Coming off the back of an impressive 1-1 draw against Arsenal, Fulham currently sit in 10th place. Yet, despite being in 10th, they are only four points behind fourth-place Manchester City. This has been one of Fulham’s and manager Marco Silva’s best starts in recent memory. Their last three games have consisted of a 1-1 draw away against Tottenham, a 3-1 victory against Brighton, and a 1-1 draw against title challengers Arsenal, so they will be fully prepared for this match against Liverpool. If Fulham hope to gain all three points, they will need Raul Jimenez to be prolific yet again in front of goal. With five goals in the league so far, Jimenez has shown glimpses of his pre-injury form. Fulham have the talent to create chances in this game, so Jimenez will need to be at his best. Emile Smith Rowe and Alex Iwobi will be crucial in providing Jimenez with sufficient service as well as leading the counter. Liverpool tend to commit bodies forward, especially at Anfield, so there will be opportunities to break for Fulham. If Smith Rowe and Iwobi can use their passing and dribbling abilities effectively, Fulham will create chances in this game.

On the other side of the ball, this is arguably the toughest test Fulham’s defense has faced all season. Liverpool’s front line have been scoring for fun under Arne Slot and they will be extra eager in front of their home fans. It is still unclear if Joachim Andersen will be available for this match, but in the likely event that he isn’t fit to start, Issa Diop and Calvin Bassey will form Fulham’s center-back partnership. With Kenny Tete and Antonee Robinson on either side of them, and Bernd Leno in goal, Fulham’s defense will be busy all night long.
