How to Watch Manchester City v Chelsea: Stream on Peacock LIVE, Schedule, Kickoff Time
Two of the Big Six meet again when Chelsea visit Manchester City this weekend at the Etihad.
In a rematch of their Week 1 fixture, Manchester City host Chelsea in a must-win game for both teams in the battle for a Premier League top four spot.
Manchester City v Chelsea
After years of Premier League domination, Manchester City have struggled this season under manager Pep Guardiola. Currently sitting in fifth place on the table, but level on points with Newcastle in sixth, City are already 12 points behind league-leading Liverpool despite having played a game more. Although you can never rule out Guardiola’s side for a late title push, it seems improbable at least at this point in the season. With that in mind, the minimum expectation for City will be a top four finish and a return to the Champions League. A victory against Chelsea this weekend would be pivotal in achieving this goal, launching Man City directly into fourth place. To do so, City will rely on the in-form duo of Erling Haaland and Phil Foden to lead the line against Chelsea. With 17 goals already this season, Haaland has been prolific yet again despite his team’s relatively poor performance. Chelsea’s defense has been prone to conceding goals, so Haaland will be looking to get on the scoresheet yet again. Despite a quiet start to the season, Foden seems to have found his form. With five goals in his last three Premier League games, Foden has been firing on all cylinders and will serve as a constant threat this weekend. If Foden and Haaland can link up well and cause Chelsea problems, City can gain all three points this weekend.
Despite being labeled as title challengers earlier in the season, Chelsea have fallen off the pace in recent weeks. With only one win in their last six Premier League games, the Blues have lost their early season form and have dropped to fourth place in the table, four points behind third-place Nottingham Forest. A win this weekend at the Etihad would allow Chelsea to move further away from City and close the gap between them and Forest. A win against City could be a massive momentum builder for the Blues. They will rely on their catalyst Cole Palmer to spark the attack. Palmer has already racked up 14 goals and six assists in the league so far. With Guardiola’s men likely to dominate possession for a majority of the match, Chelsea will need speed and precision on the counter to expose City’s deficiencies in transition. Palmer’s quality on the ball will be critical in leading the break and creating opportunities for his team. In midfield, Moisés Caicedo’s relentlessness and ability to win the ball back will be vital for Chelsea. City have desperately missed Rodri this season, instead playing a more attacking midfield trio and asking Mateo Kovacic to play the holding role. Caicedo’s explosiveness and pace can exploit this inefficiency in City’s midfield. Most importantly though, Chelsea will need to be stout defensively. Despite their struggles this season, Manchester City still maintain one of the most formidable attacking fronts in the league led by Haaland. If the Blues hope to take something from this game, they will need to limit their defensive errors and avoid any mistakes from playing out of the back. If they can keep Haaland relatively quiet, Chelsea can take at least one point from this game.
