Spurs and Man United have had their fair share of struggles this season with both teams currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Their previous two meetings have brought plenty of goals and entertainment, so this weekend should be no different.
Tottenham Hotspur v. Manchester United
Having been knocked out of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup in the past week, and sitting in 14th place in Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are running out of competitions to challenge for. Thankfully, Spurs have already progressed to the next round of the Europa League, which will be their last chance at silverware this season. Should Spurs go all the way in that competition, winning the Europa League will also grant them a spot in next season’s Champions League. If they lose in the knockout rounds, their last chance at European football for the 2025-26 season will be finishing 7th or 8th (depending on how English teams perform in Europe) in Premier League. With 14 games left to play in the league, Spurs currently sit 13 points off 7th place Bournemouth and 10 points off 8th place Aston Villa. This makes this weekend’s matchup with Manchester United a must-win game for Tottenham Hotspur. Unfortunately for Spurs, the squad has been hit with an injury crisis of late. They will be missing Dominic Solanke, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and more this weekend, but longtime absentees James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson, and Guglielmo Vicario are all reported to be making a push to start against United. Any reinforcements would be a massive boost for Spurs, but as of now, it’s expected the team will rely on talisman Heung-Min Son and star performer Dejan Kulusevski to lead the line. They’ll be supported by newcomer Mathys Tel who scored on his Tottenham Hotspur debut last weekend. If Tel can build on the momentum from his debut and establish chemistry with Son and Kulusevski, Spurs will be able to cause United problems.
Sitting in 13th place in the league table, Manchester United are in a similar predicament to their Big Six rival Tottenham Hotspur. Despite their progress in the FA Cup and the Europa League, recent losses at Old Trafford to Crystal Palace and Brighton have prevented United from building any momentum in Premier League. Advancement in the FA Cup and the Europa League will have implications for European qualification for next season, but should the Red Devils be knocked out of these competitions, the domestic league will be their last chance at achieving European football next season. With that in mind, Manchester United will be desperate for a victory against Spurs this weekend. It’s no secret that United have performed better away from Old Trafford, so Ruben Amorim’s men have a chance to take something from this game. To do so, they will rely on their captain Bruno Fernandes and youngster Amad Diallo to spark their attack. Two of the most consistent performers under Amorim, Fernandes and Diallo should enjoy their time against a Spurs defense that has conceded six goals in their last two matches. With Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling for goals, United may also need to turn to Alejandro Garnacho to start, whose second-half performance against Leicester last Friday inspired the Red Devils’ comeback victory. Defensively, United will miss the presence of Lisandro Martinez, who is out with a long-term injury. Instead, they will rely on Harry Maguire to command the backline and it will be interesting to see how January arrival Patrick Dorgu performs in his Premier League debut.
