7 Potential Team USA Members to Know Before the 2024 Paris Olympics
Get to know these potential Team USA greats before they represent America at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
With less than three months remaining until the 2024 Paris Olympic Games officially begin, Team USA is filling out its roster and preparing to go for the gold. While the American team is likely to be filled with big-name, gold-medal champions like Katie Ledecky, LeBron James, Coco Gauff, Caleb Dressel, and Suni Lee, many more incredible athletes are set to head to Paris and compete to top the podium.
Get to know these Team USA athletes before they head to the Olympics this summer. If you don’t know them now, you’re bound to by July.
Griffin Colapinto (surfing)
This summer’s games will mark only the second time surfing has been an Olympic event. Though young Californian surfer Griffin Colapinto didn’t qualify for the event’s debut in Tokyo, he’s since come to dominate the sport and cement himself as one of the world’s top male surfers. Now ranked No. 1 as of this year, he’s aiming to go for gold on the massive waves of Tahiti this summer.
Sha’Carri Richardson (women’s track and field)
Richardson is one of the highest-profile sprinters in the world and for good reason. Simply put, she’s very, very fast. Sha’Carri would likely already have an Olympic medal under her belt had she not been controversially disqualified from the Tokyo Games in 2021. Ever resilient, Richardson didn’t let that setback get in the way of her drive and is now heading to Paris as No. 1 in the world in the women’s 100-meter dash.
Sophia Smith (women’s soccer)
Team USA is the most successful squad in the history of women’s soccer, but the team is at a bit of a crossroads after a disappointing finish in the 2023 World Cup and Megan Rapinoe’s departure. But heading into Paris, the team has a new coach and a new generation of rising stars, the 22-year-old forward Sophia Smith being one of the most prominent. With Smith’s blend of technique, speed, power, and creativity, USWNT is entering the Olympics in a whole new era.
Victor Montalvo (men’s breaking)
Among other firsts at the upcoming Paris games is an exciting new event that blends artistry with intense athleticism. Breakdancing, designated in the games as Breaking, will make its debut in Paris’ iconic Place de la Concorde. Victor Montalvo, who competes as B-boy Victor, is the top American in the sport and is poised to be dancing for the gold as he helps usher the sport into the global spotlight.
Katie Grimes (women’s swimming)
Competing in the 2020 Tokyo games at only 15, Katie Grimes was the youngest member of Team USA across any sport. Just barely missing out on the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle at the last games, Grimes is heading to Paris with strong performances in the World Championships. Still only 18, she’s been called the future of swimming by Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer of all time.
Shilese Jones (women’s gymnastics)
While the competition to make the US women’s gymnastics team is as fierce as ever, including household names like Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas, Shelise Jones is a favorite to join the team and go for the gold in Paris. Coming off first-place finishes in the uneven bars at the 2023 World Championships, and a 2023 all-around bronze medal, the 21-year-old Seattle native is certainly one to watch in Paris.
Anna Hall (women’s track)
The heptathlon is a grueling track event made up of seven different disciplines, including hurdles, shotput, and high jump, and Anna Hall is bound to be one the event’s new stars at the 2024 Olympics. After suffering a devastating foot injury during the Toyko Olympic trials, Hall has persevered to make a fantastic recovery, receiving a bronze in heptathlon at the 2022 World Championships with one of the highest scores ever achieved.
